Glorious Ravage at Roulette – THURS OCT 12 2017

with bassist/composer Lisa Mezzacappa and guitarist John Finkbeiner after our rehearsal yesterday for today’s show. #selfie

Dear Friends…tonight is the night. So proud of Lisa and all the great work she has done to put on this massive work. We had a great ‘skeletal’ rehearsal and I’m excited to be part of this great configuration later today. I do hope you’ll come by for this ultra-special event which was also a NYT top 10 things to do in NYC NOW!

San Francisco composer + bassist Lisa Mezzacappa presents Glorious Ravage, an immersive evening-length song cycle for a large ensemble of California improvisers with films commissioned from Bay Area experimental filmmakers. Glorious Ravage features original compositions by Mezzacappa, and takes as its inspiration the writings of female adventurers near the turn of the 20th century, who trekked to the wildest parts of the earth to discover, escape, and lose themselves.

September 2017 News!

Dear Friends,

Summer is winding down friends and I hope you’ve had a good one and shoot – maybe still enjoying what’s left of interesting and quirky summer!

Weather wise this summer been mild and seriously wet (I hope no one this list has friends or family that are in jeopardy in Texas or Louisiana because of Hurricane Harvey) and the political air is as toxic as it’s ever been. Still, we the people who see things differently are coming out to battle these ugly forces. Those of us making creative work are doing all we can to at the very least keep positive energy out in the world. We must keep on…

And I’m keeping on with an active Fall that includes album releases and some wonderful concerts. The gig page on the website is up to date so check it out! I’ll be back in more detail about these concerts as the time gets closer. But let me bring you up to speed on what’s coming right up!

Summer Announcements: MoMA, Creative Improvisation Workshop and more

Dear Friends,

How is your summer going so far? Tremendously fulfilling and gloriously relaxing is my hope for you! I’m just back from Vancouver, BC (Canada) working as the Artist in Residence Workshop facilitator for the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Which translated into hosting all the artist led workshops (the festival features 10 such workshops) as well as running one of my own. Incredible to have an opportunity to hear how my fellow peers go about their work and how each artist found ways to connect with the audiences that came out to these well-attended workshops to hear what we all had to say.

I gave my workshop in Vancouver on Creative Improvisation, a subject of vocal technique and development I’m more passionate than ever to teach vocalists and instrumentalists alike. Giving musicians the ability to improvise with their voices and the tangible tools to do so. As a long time improvising vocalist that figured so much of what I do on my own, having the tools to share how to open that door and go down that road feels like a new journey. The workshop in Vancouver at Tom Lee Music was live streamed! Here is it below:

Creative Improvisation

Yes teaching improvisation beyond the jazz realm is a path I’ve been moving toward more as an educator.  Spring 2017 I gave my first Creative Improvisation Course ( a 4 week – 8 hour Course) which sold out and had a great response from the students and musicians that took part. The course and the subsequent feedback was tremendous and I’ve booked a follow-up course that starts this September 19, 2017.  This is an even bigger course – a 12 hour course running for 5 weeks with another concert at the end.  In this course participants will learn, discover, explore and leave with tangible tools for improvising inside, outside, alongside songs and beyond.
12 Hour Course on Improvisation-Full Schedule
Tuesdays, September 19 & 26: 7-9PM
Wednesday October 4: 6:30-9:30PM
Tuesday, October 10: 6:30-9:30PM
Tuesday, October 17: 7-9PM
Final Concert:
SUNDAY, October 22 2017 @ 6PM
Note the flyer at the end of this post and get in touch with any questions at lessons@fayvictor.com.

Testimonials
“Fay Victor is the truth. She is a Teacher, Guide, and Mentor to so many. I took Voice Lessons with Fay for several years and when I saw she was kicking off a Creative Vocal Improvisation Workshop, I was thrilled. This was my chance to get past this fear & anxiety I have battled with for a decade or more. I also knew that Fay would provide me with the guidance and a safe space to work through those issues, while also challenging me to maximize the potential of my instrument. As I guessed, Fay took the Vocalists on a beautiful journey. One, with no rules, with the exception of one, and that was to listen. Listen to your yourself, your fellow Vocalists, and the band. Be mindful of where the music is going and where you can go along with it. My view of the possibilities of vocal expression are forever changed. I see shapes, colors, and the ability to interpret even a painting into sound on my own terms! I owe this all to Fay and recommend this Workshop, Private Lessons, and any chance to afford yourself the opportunity to work with her.” – TM

“The Creative Improvisation Workshop allowed me to step out of my mind and into the depths of  my feelings.  What I’ve learned most from the experience is that being in the moment, both still and actively listening, brought out my true artistic expression.  Fay provided a foundation for us in the form of technique and improvisational language. But, the heavy focus that I normally apply to my singing was lessened because I was trusting in the moment. As a result, the technique and language followed.  I encourage all singers to jump into the experience, step out of their norm and find their whole creative selves.  Sharing this experience with other women also added a spiritual element that is not always present in traditional jazz workshops.  I am looking forward to the next time.”JL

Finally, I mentioned that I was a part of a movie made by an amazing young artist named Martine Syms that has an exhibition at MoMA up till July 16th – which means one more week!! New Yorker Magazine gave her a lot of love this week.  Read the great piece here and go see the show before it closes.http://www.newyorker.com/culture/persons-of-interest/how-to-be-a-successful-black-woman

Thanks for reading and I’ll make a post shortly about the 55BAR Birthday Hang coming up!

June 2017 is Busting OUT

Greetings!

I hope this message meets your eyes in good spirits despite the turn the world seems to have taken. I believe that love does indeed still conquer all.
“Hatred does not cease through hatred at any time. Hatred ceases through love. This is an unalterable law.” – Buddha

Personally, all well in this neck of the woods, not too long back from the London UK and finished up May playing with the great downtown quartet Sexmob for the first time, playing in a new trio with Satoshi Takeishi’s compositions on Japanese death poems (haikus) at The Stone then my monthly happening at the 55BAR with Marvin Sewell + Sean Conly this time around.  June is tightly packed with happenings – starting with the phenomenal Vision Festival –  and I wanted to share what’s going on.

I’m even in a movie friends…  🙂  Please read on…

May Midway: what’s up and + what’s coming

Dear Friends,

Just back from London or working with the New York Jazz Workshop on a great team-building venture for Thomson Reuters top execs. A great team to team build with in Marc Mommaas, Marco Chelo and Michael Markus. Another bonus of this trip was spending some quality time with a cousin I lost touch with and hadn’t seen in close to 40 years. Lots to catch up on and we got right too it. Added to all this loveliness was a last minute invitation to sit in with a great trio at the Vortex in London last night.

Back home and back at it!

Tonight (FRIDAY, MAY 19) I’m joining Sexmob at Symphony Space to do our take on Gil Scott Heron’s seminal civil rights classic “The Revolution Will Be Televised” alongside. Jaimeo Brown and Martha Mooke and Rahzel then on SUNDAY, MAY 21, I’m appearing on the final night of the wonderful Satoshi Takeishi’s Stone Residency featuring Ned Rothenberg (reeds) ( His residency is a NYT pick and our set on the 21st is highlighted in the feature!) That set focuses on Satoshi’s compositions for Japanese death poems and they are just lovely.

Then next THURSDAY, MAY 25 back at the 55bar with Marvin Sewell on guitar and Sean Conly on double bass. The second time I’ve bought this duo in and it’s fresh….7-9pm, No Cover. Jaimie Breezy Branch on trumpet will not be joining us as previously mentioned.

I round out the month performing as part of Spectacle! Up in Hartford, CT on SUNDAY MAY 28th with a 15 piece ensemble put together by guitarist Joe Morris and trumpeter Stephen Haynes. The group is amazing, including William Parker, Hamid Drake, Daniel Carter performing in small groups and closing out the afternoon as a full ensemble.

Thanks for reading and see you soon for June!
