55 BAR Residency Cancelled this month

Hey Friends,
Mix-ups and snafus happen and as it happens I won’t be at the 55BAR this month on February 23rd.  I will be back on March 30th with In Praise of Ornette, a great group exploring Ornette Coleman’s music.  See you then or the month after that!
Be safe and well out there,
Fay

February 2017 NEWS & Happenings

FV with shades
Friends!

Wow – just 2 1/2 weeks into this new administration and the world seems like a distant planet. I hope landing here finds you well and adjusting to the new reality of our world with a healthy perspective. More than ever I feel a deep gratitude to be a creative person in this time. I can document and give voice to my frustrations and concerns in many ways. So performances and opportunities to interact with audiences in various communities mean everything to me and I’m making it a point to be VOCAL however I can. If you feel you have a voice, you too need to figure out how you can speak out. It is a little easier for us so let’s use it. Here’s what’s happening:

*55 BAR Residency this month features Marika Hughes (cello) and Darius Jones (alto saxophone) in OLD SONGS, NEW SKIN, a re-calibration of older compositions of ours (myself and Jochem van Dijk). It’s been a fun exploration and we’re planning to record these pieces in the near future. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2017 7-9PM, 55 Christopher Street, NY, NY
Marika & Darius

*We entered NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest! Keeping it protest and real, choosing a tune from the Fay Victor Ensemble’s first album (Cartwheels through the Cosmos -Artistshare 2007) entitled SPIN, written during the Bush Administration and how they manipulated the press into convincing the American people to go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

*Here’s the latest video of my SneaKAttacK project, combining original video, music, texts and sounds with a political perspective. This one is entitled WHITE.

*Starting on February 28th, I’ll host my first CREATIVE IMPROVISATION Workshop here in New York City. It’s a 4 week course that is now sold out with very little promotion. This is exciting because I’ve felt there was a need fro vocalists to tap into other ways of improvising with their voices and I have so much to say on the subject. I’m looking forward to working with the participants and to the final concert at the end of March where we put it all together.

January 2017 saw the 3rd anniversary of the passing of the great Roy Campbell. Roy was a fantastic musician that was loved not only for his sound but also for his support of musicians and his honesty in letting you know how your music landed on him. His passing revealed how precious that energy is within a musical community. He is still sorely missed. Here is a something we did back in 2011 called KAISO STORIES and avant jazz – calypso project and this piece is WE is WE.

Thank you for reading and remember…we who oppose this new administration are finding our footing and making our voices heard. That may be all we can do for the next 2 years but its VERY important for us all to be in that fight. At the end of the day the policies seek to help no-one but those least in need of anything. If we all remember that, we can steel our focus and work out the language to rally everyone who will suffer the long term effects of 45’s agenda.

Happy New Year….

Early Spring in New York City

Greetings,

Its been a busy beginning the new year behind the scenes but I wanted to let you know what was coming up for me this month with gigs out and about. Had a wonderful first gig of the year in duo with trombonist Ben Gerstein channeling blues and strange sounds on the Arts for Art/Evolving Festival on Saturday January 7th (and continuing until Jan 22) and now about to head out to the West Coast to do a great house concert then record Bay area bassist/composer Lisa Mezzacappa’s glorious song cycle called Glorious Ravage for 2 days in Fantasy Studios in West Oakland, CA. Very excited to be a part of this great piece with an ensemble to die for.

Recording Glorious Ravage
January 14-15 2017 at Fantasy Studios
About Glorious Ravage:
Glorious Ravage is a panoramic free jazz song cycle by San Francisco Bay Area bassist and composer Lisa Mezzacappa, that features a large ensemble of stellar California improvisers performing with films created by Bay Area moving image artists Janis Crystal Lipzin, Kathleen Quillian, Alfonso Alvarez and Konrad Steiner. The program takes as its inspiration the adventures and writings of lady explorers of the 19th century who trekked to the wildest parts of the earth, to escape, to discover, and to lose themselves.
Glorious Ravage premiered in fall 2015, in Northern and Southern California – at REDCAT as part of the Angel City Jazz Festival in Los Angeles, CA, at UC Irvine and in San Francisco at Brava Theater Center.

Happy Holidays + One Last Show!

Some Holiday cheer from my nabe in Brooklyn, NY
Some Holiday cheer from my nabe in Brooklyn, NY

Greetings and Happy Holidays to you all.

This has certainly been a trying year, yet I aim to end 2016 and move into 2017 with as much light and love I can muster.  I saw myself begin to shrink in some ways after November 8th, fearful of what may befall me and my friends, colleagues and family.  As a person of color, it’s hard not to be painfully aware that we’re in a time space of inspired separation and no matter what side of the divide you stand – less of us feels safe.

But this  h e a v y  feelings has lifted, I see random acts of kindness all around me.  I see many trying to cling firmly to their goodness, doing what they can to be a positive force.  So I wish you all the very best wishes for the season and for the future.  We can only look up and we’ll find the good way to make it through.

If you’re in New York City around the holidays and want a nice and sultry thing to do, join me for my last gig of the  year at the 55BAR!

Till then,

Creative Improvisation Workshop – Feb/Mar 2017

Greetings Friends,

A special message to share with you.
I’ve been improvising with my voice for over 15 years, and there is much to say and share about the process of using a vocal instrument within the realm of myriad improvisational situations and how to develop the language and technique to do so.
The idea for a workshop at the California Jazz Conservatory(CJC) in 2015 focused on Creative Improvisation was suggested by voalist and Vocal Chair at CJC Laurie Antonioli suggested the idea of sharing with vocalists what I do. I took this opportunity to develop a curriculum to do just that.  The sold-out workshop laid the ground work for the upcoming course. Since then I’ve done Creative Improvisation workshops at the CJC once more, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Bern, Switzerland and Montreal, Canada, tweaking the ideas along the way.  I am thrilled and excited to present the Improvising Beyond Scat: Creative Improvisation Workshop, in New York City for the first time. Please take a moment to read the flyer below.  Get in touch and spread the word!

November NEWS 2016 or let’s not fall off that cliff…

A weeping willow has the mood of myself and so many going into this Election Day. Melancholic beauty.
A weeping willow has the mood of myself and so many going into this Election Day. Melancholic beauty.

Making this post on Election Day 2016.

This may be the last post I make in a world that I know. I hope it isn’t so.

Greetings from Troy, NY where I’m appearing in a movie conceived and filmed by an amazing artist named Martine Syms. An incredible young artist you NEED to check out. The distraction is intoxicating and welcoming. Irregardless of how it goes I hope we all find a way to heal the wounds that this election has kicked up. Whatever side of the aisle you’re on, you can’t think that hatred is healing or positive. I’m wishing us all good luck for an outcome we can live with. Love, art, and music will still be here and we will need it more than ever!

October 2016 News and Views

Greetings friends,

Deep into a busy Fall season with wonderful things happening.  Here’s hoping all is wonderful in your world. And perhaps I’ll see you at one of the happenings coming up.Just a recap about September before going forward…it was chock full of exciting performances and important lessons!  Recorded a beautiful project with the legendary trombonist Roswell Rudd and with trumpeter composer Wadada Leo Smith on his Oratorio for Rosa Parks, which we also performed on the FONT Festival. I also spent an incredible weekend in Montreal performing a few concerts and running a Creative Improvisation Workshop. Great audiences, a full workshop and many magical moments and many thanks to my great host Geraldine Eguiluz who made the trip North possible.

This Autumn in New York is almost perfect weather wise.  The bombing in the middle of September rattled but didn’t shake us New Yorkers.  Barely anyone has mentioned it since.  Once of the things I love about living here.  We live with too many different beautiful people to know that you can’t generalize about anyone.  You’ve got to take people as they come.  So we’re OK. But my antennae is up. We’re one month shy of electing a new President to this nation.  I want to ask you all to vote.  This election more than ever, this maybe one of the most important elections ever. Make your voices heard.  Thank you for reading.

September 2016 and more. Happy Autumn!

Greetings to you all,

Summer is just about over as the Autumn season beckons, in fact it’s already begun. Folks headed back to school are already there and the warm weather in NYC can’t change the angle of the new light, how it sets on the horizon. How the hues are changing as the earth’s axis starts to pivot away from the sun on our hemisphere. I see it in the news cycle. A presidential election is also on horizon…long a-coming. Feels this world may be transformed by the result. As I write this the night before the 15th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in my city, I cant help but think how that fateful day and loss of dear life planted the seeds for where we are now. Now feels like another fateful moment, period, era. I’m slightly anxious yet hopeful that we’ll wake up on the first Wednesday in November breathing a sigh of relief. A collective sigh..

roswell-recording

So as this season unfolds, I want to share with you the amazing projects and shows I’m honored to be a part of. In fact I’ve already dove into the season working 3 days right at the beginning of this month on a new project with the great trombonist Roswell Rudd. We spent 2 days in the studio with a day off in between up near the beginnings of the Catskill Mountains. It was a beautiful and powerful few days connecting with Roswell, bassist Ken Filiano and pianist Lafayette Harris, Jr. The air, good country walks and long meals and conversations added that extra magic to the music we laid down. This is also my first album performing standards in about 15 years. So I’m very excited for everyone to hear it when it’s released in 2017 on Rare Noise records. Now back in NYC, I start off my performing schedule doing a jazz brunch this SUNDAY, September 11, 2016. I do these so rare and only at the North Square. Maybe see you there or any of the other options this season.  Looking forward and thanks for reading.

Mid Summer News…

Metarie Cemetery, New Orleans, LA
Metarie Cemetery, New Orleans, LA

Friends!

Here’s to hoping you are all on a beach somewhere soaking up the sunshine as you read this post…summer is still roaring on.  I am not on a beach as I write this but no complaining for me.  Summer has been a blast so far…

This past July I spent 10 days in the great city of New Orleans absorbing the heat and the music. The heat was OK to deal with there, felt good even.  Back in NYC with a heatwave that didn’t keep the good vibes down for my Annual Birthday Hang at the 55BAR on Thursday, July 28th.  Wow! The music, the musicians, the cake, the audience – everything – was incredible and soul nourishing.  Thanks to those that were there for making it so much more special! check out a sound clip below of some of the celebration.

Snapshots of FV’s Birthday Hang at the 55BAR on July 28th. A great evening of great sounds and people.

This month I start things off with the Annual Advanced Vocal Summit for the New York Jazz Workshop.  This will be my 7th time running the SOLD OUT 4-day workshop +++ we’ll have a concert featuring all the vocalists on SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 from 5-8PM at the Lexington Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. A great opportunity to catch an  international group of vocalists on their way up and with a kickass team of Janice Friedman on piano and Kevin Hailey on double bass to accompany us all.

The rest of the month shapes up nicely as well!

>>Wednesday, AUGUST 17 2016 with Joe Morris, William Parker, Hamid Drake and Gerald Cleaver at the Stone. 10PM. !!!! Part of Joe Morris’ week long residency

>>Thursday, AUGUST 18 2016 with Tomas Fujiwara and Ben Gerstein at Manhattan Inn.  SPYing Series curated by Jamie Breezy Branch and Brandon Lopez. 11 PM
